Hemel ERSA Fun Race - May 2009
To celebrate the opening of the new Snow Centre, and as a test before the national races later in the summer, Hemel held an ERSA fun race on 31st May, limiting numbers to 150 by eliminating the lowest seed point racers from the region.
There was good support from club members both inside the building and on the slope helping make it as well run as the normal dry slope races. Great thanks to John Reedy and Sally Bartlett and the entire course crew including Craig Wright, Gerard Flahive and James Grant who did an excellent job maintaining the course for the racers.
The fastest Female club Skier was Sophie Rolph who was 4th overall with a time of 13.4 seconds, being chased by Anna Henderson and Olivia Goldsmith, while Tom Grant was the fastest male overall and the only racer to beat 12 seconds, followed by James Tauz and Alex White.
Overall the club racers did well in all age groups with smiles from most racers regardless of their final times or position.
In the Mini Girls Daisy Oblein was 1st, Romana Bardetti 2nd and Nia Boty 3rd. In BG1 Georgia Keys was 1st with India Morrell 3rd, while in CH1 Anna Henderson was 1st. Sophie Rolph won the CH2 group with Sasha Waloff 3rd, and Olivia Goldsmith 2nd in JN1.The masters was closely fought with Liz Warmington 2nd overtaking Sheila Driscoll 3rd on the last run
The males found the competition tougher, but still managed to win 8 medals. William Newell winning BG1, Alex White winning CH1 with Josh Penning Lambert 3rd. Tom Grant won CH2, James Tautz was 2nd in JN1 with Chris Aikens 2nd in JN2, meanwhile Clive Schoefield was 3rd in MA1 and Nick Warmington won MA3.
There was then a G.S. race, following which the slope was available for open skiing until our 2pm finish.
There were many very positive comments from other racers about the slope, the facilities, the food, and the event as a whole.
