Grand Prix Race 4 – Sunday 19th June 2011
Twenty-one dedicated Hemel SRC racers (and supporters) made the trip to the Chill Factor E in Manchester last weekend to represent the club in competition against 188 other athletes. The Telford Club National saw the return from ‘race’ retirement of coach Mr Phillip Brown. Crowds of racers gathered on the balcony to cheer on his performance and pick up some racing tips.
The Telford Club National was very successful for Hemel SRC with Caroline Powell joint female winner and Matt Thompson joint male winner. Seven of the sixteen Hemel racers who competed were on the podium, scoring valuable points towards the overall ranking. Podium results; Caroline Powell 1st Jn2, Kerry Turnock 1st Master, Judy Reid 2nd Master, Robert Poth 1st Ch2, Daniel Poth 2nd Jn1, Matt Thompson 1st Jn2, Gerard Flahive 2nd Jn2.
The slalom courses for the Grand Prix Race 4 were set to challenge the 129 competing racers in different ways. The ladies first run was a technical course set by Carl Ryding with offset gates and a wicked banana. Meanwhile, the men’s course set by Richard Breese demanded quick feet and nerves of steel. The snow held up well with a perfect hard base that allowed a swop of courses with minimum adjustments for the second runs.
Competition was tough but the quality of the Hemel SRC racers shone through. Caroline Powell fought a hard battle with the top ladies but in the end had to settle for third female overall. Gerard Flahive was the top placed Hemel SRC male in 4th overall. Podium results; Robert Poth 1st Ch2, Max Baggio 1st Jn1, Daniel Poth 3rd Jn1, Gerard Flahive 3rd Jn2, Caroline Powell 1st Jn2, Kerry Turnock 1st Master, Judy Reid 2nd Master.
Well done to everyone who competed. Don’t forget to get your entries in for the Hemel Indoor Club National on Saturday 16th July and the final Grand Prix, to be held at Hemel on Sunday 17th July.
