Live From The Field – Gloucester SSW

News report from Snowsport Wales (SSW) club event sponsored by Champery ski resort, Switzerland at Gloucester Ski and Snowboard centre, 19th April. Hemel took a small team to one of the first outdoor races of the season over the Easter weekend at Gloucester. Last minute entries were thankfully accepted by SSW and the final team comprised of Nicole Shering, Toby Case, Lily Hawkins, Danielle Hawkins and Zara Hawkins. The sun shone although the temperature was cool. The Hemel team performed very well with silver medals for Nicole Shering (U16)and Toby Case (U14) and Zara Hawkins (U14) gaining a bronze medal (see photo). Lily and Danielle Hawkins saw themselves in medal positions but DSQ on their final run. With over 100 racers it was a long, competitive but very enjoyable day on an excellent slope with a fast running surface. The dual slalom team races in the afternoon saw the Hemel team up against some bigger and very strong opposition from well represented clubs and universities. Despite 2 early losses we recovered well with 2 victories and a thrilling dead heat. From the Hawkins family perspective it was our first venture outside of regional races and our first race on a dry slope since Brentwood last year. After a few practice runs on the longest dry slope they have skied on the confidence came back and the smiles on the face on the drive home mean we will be looking forward to an active summer on the race circuit !
