The weekend of the 11 and 12 July saw races up and down the country. GBR races 5 and 6 took place on the indoor snow at Manchester with once again a low turnout of entries. The ERSA Bassingbourn Summer League was held at Welwyn whilst the fate of the Bassingbourn Slope is still unsure. A murky start at Welwyn which soon turned into a glorious days racing. A relatively low turnout, for ERSA, saw 130 entrants make the trip to Welwyn. A lot of racing saw the 3 individual runs, the team events, the Stampede event, the Evolution TOP 32 and as the day was running efficiently, no problems, the organisers decided to give the U12’s their own TOP 16. All completed with prize giving by 1430. Time for a BBQ in the evening.
Hemel had a good number of racers at all events. Our own Jon Reidy, assisted by his son Alex, set the courses, 12 gates with 12 turns for both the main and stubby courses.
In the Under 12 ages, Nia BOTY was podium top in 1st place, she was very closely followed by Katie BARDER in 3rd. Holly TUTT was again 1st in the U08’s and Holly ARLOTT was 2nd in the U10’s. In the boys U12 competition Thomas REIDY was placed 3rd followed 0.09s behind by Charlie NEWTON in 4th. Thomas BEGLIN was 6th in the U12 and Hari TAMANA 8th.
In the Girls/Ladies main competition Carys BOTY was 1st in the U16 group and 3rd overall. Elise SNOW was 4th overall and 2nd in the U16’s. In the U14 age group Eleanor SCRANAGE HARRISION was 2nd, 7th overall. Emily DEAN was placed 4th in the Girls U16, Bea BARDER only just behind her in 6th place. In the U14 group Lily HAWKINS was 4th, her sister Danielle HAWKINS 6th, Harriet WARMINGTON 8th and the last of the HAWKINS triplets, Zara HAWKINS in 10th. Lydia BRADLEY was 9th in the U16’s. Unfortunately Charlotte Tapsell, leading after the first two runs DNF run 3.
The Boys/Men then raced the same course, a strong field and with a fast flowing course some interesting racing. The highest placed male racer from Hemel was Oliver WELLS, 2nd U21 and 5th overall. Byron APPLETON was 2nd U14 boy, Harry BOTY 3rd U18, Luca REIDY 3 U21. William NEWTON finished was 7th in the U16’s, he was only just ahead of Richard WARMINGTON, 4th U18 and Tony SHARPE, 2nd M23. Charley Humphries after a strange start in run no 1 eventually finished 5th U14 boys. Stuart GREEN was 4th SM1, Harry SCHLOTTE 13th in the U14. Last but not least was the “ageless” Stephen BRADLEY in 7th place ion the M23 group.
On the Saturday at Manchester a number of our older experienced racers took part in the GBR 5 race. The courses were set by Colin Tee and Robin Kellen. None of our U12 made the long trip up north. In the main event Hemel faired well. Charlotte TAPSELL was 3rd overall, this made her 1st in the U14 age group. Anna CALDWELL was 5th in the U154, 11th overall. The men’s event saw a win for Robert POTH. Robert TREBILCOCK was 2nd SEN and 4th overall. Finley DAVIS continued his good form finishing in 1st position in the U16 boys, 8th overall. Patrick CALDWELL was 28th overall. John NORRIS and Matt WANG were 3rd and 4th respectively in the MAS category. On Sunday whilst the Summer League was sunning itself at Welwyn GBR 6 was held in the fridge at Manchester’s Chill Factore. Courses set by Mark Vinter and Carl Ryding. Both had 17 gates with 16 turns. Once again Hemel had no members competing in the U12 age groups. As our lone racer from the GBR 5 on Saturday in the female group was competing in the ERSA we also had no entrants for the ladies event. In the Boys/Men event Robert POTH was again on top podium place finishing 1st overall. Josh KEANE was 4th in the U21 making him 7th overall. John NORRIS and Matt WANG were again placed 3rd and 4th in the MAS competition. Our only other racer, Finley Davis DNF Run 1.
