Races 30 & 31 May = Norfolk CN & Vikings CN

Nor_Vik_CNThis weekend was the first of the Club National events being held within our region. On Saturday was the Norfolk CN and Sunday the Vikings CN. A real mixture of weather and courses. The weather on Saturday was Sunny, if not a little chilly in the wind whereas Sunday was wet and windy for most of the day. Suffolk came into its own and “tent city” was established. Two very contrasting days but great competition, camaraderie and fun and from all competitors. If never tried dry lope racing, although not very dry on Sunday, you really should give it a try. Also, after all, skiing is an outdoor all weather sport. Next outdoor race after the Hemel ERSA indoors next week is the Essex ERSA at Brentwood the following day. Enter at ersa.co.uk

A Club National event consists of 3 runs down the same course with the best from R1 and R2 added to R3 to find the award winners, i.e. the 3rd run must be finished. With these events are also held an U12/120 race, the awards being given for the best time out of 3 run through the stubby course.

NORFOLK Club National, Saturday 30  May 2015

A later start than normal at Norfolk on Sunday as many people were doing both races. The course was set by Marc Telling from Ambition. It consisted of 15 gates with 15 turns. The competition got off to a flying start with the forerunners. Paul Telling, Marc Telling, Stuart Riches, Thomas Baldwin, George Burrourghs and Darly Shailes. The first 4 competing for the pride of the academies. All 4 were racers at the top of their game when they stopped competively. They have lost none of their skills. Their first forerun was a friendly affair but then it became competitive, all sharpening skis, waxing and using ceramics on the edge. Unfortunately we are not allowed to give times but f in the main competition they would be well placed.

Into the real competition of the day saw the Females race first through Marc’s course. The Hemel ladies fared well; Amy Peterson was our highest placed member in 23rd overall, 5th in the U18’s. Nicole SHERING after R1/2 was placed in the top 5 but unfortunately could not maintain the form in R3 and finished 35 overall, 13th in the U16. A racer new to the National circuit was Ellie FARROW, she had a good day for her first outing finishing 8th in a very tough U14 age group.

The men then raced the same course. A really tough competive race with the tp Juniors/Seniors really going for it. The event was won by James Sieber from ASR just piping David Hatcher into second place.  New member but established racer Will DEAKIN was placed a really credible 4th. An established racer, but rarely seen on the artificial surface was Robert TREBILCOCK. Three good runs getting better with each placed him 4th SEN and 9th overall. Byron APPLETON topped the podium in the U16’s. William NEWTON in the same age group was 5th.  Our only MAS competiting, Tony SHARPE was placed 7th, a difficult group as it encompasses all the MAS whereas ERSA split them up. Charlie NEWTON and Alfie TURNER, both in thei first competition in the main event, were placed 9th and 10th respectively.

VIKINGS Club National, Sunday 31 May 2015

The competition then moved over to the Vikings home slope at Ipswich on the Sunday. Wet and windy made for a fast race. The course was set by Vikings trainer, Foo Troung. He set 13 gates and 13 turns. After the Start Gazeebo blew away the rae was started with the Females. Nicole SHERING got back to winning ways, with 3 good runs she finished 3rd overall and 1st in the U16 group. In the battle with the HAWKINS triplets, Danielle came out on top by the smallest of margins finishing 9th in the U16 wit Zara HAWKINS and Lily HAWKINS finishing 12th and 14th respectively. Ellie FARROW was 12th in the U14, a great experience for her in to exciting events.

The men racing on the same course, getting faster with the rain, saw tight competition. Hemel were placed 1st and 3rd overall. Will DEAKIN proved that the likes of David Hatcher and Harry Hornsby can be beaten. Will was placed 1st overall witrh fellow club member, Robert TREBILCOCK, being placed 3rd. Not a bad attempt for a snow racer. It can be done. Byron APPLETON was beaten into 2nd place in the boys U16 race by local racer Aron Troung. If ever in Ipswich visit Dads Chinese restaurant (Troungs), wont find a better one in the country. Wilkliam NEWTON was 6th U16. Tony SHARP improved his ranking from yesterday in a no less tough group finishing 5th in the MAS group. Charlie NEWTON and Alfie TURNER finished the race in 7th and 9th in the U14 age group.
