Races 6 & 7 June = ERSA Hemel SL, ERSA Essex SL

Slope_1-5.jpgThe Summer ERSA Race season continued this weekend with the Hemel ERSA on Saturday. A later start than normal had the race organisers slightly concerned but this was proved to be unfounded. A good, well organised and run race saw 180 entrants compete in two slalom runs and a GS. Thanks to Jon and Sally for two excellent courses that proved a test for the better racers but still straightforward enough for the novices. HSRC thanks all the people from both the club and ERSA for assisting during the day.  The full results can be found at http://www.ersa.co.uk/2015_races

A busy weekend with 4 races that Hemel members competed in. The most important one for us was the ERSA Hemel SL held at the centre on Saturday 6 June. As stated a later start which seemed to prove favourable with the majority of the entrants. The event started promptly at 1430 with open practice and after much discussion in the background we were allowed to set 3 courses, two full poles and a stubby course. The awards are based on the best run out of two. Both runs down the same course. Jon and Sally set the courses which all comprised of 14 gates and 14 turns.

Hemel had a very good entry of 80+ although there were some noticeable people missing, remember as a race club you are expected to represent your club at events. Next chance will be the HEMEL CN on Saturday 11 July, same start time. See http://ersa.co.uk for entry details.

The competition started with the U12 and younger racing the stubby course followed by the females and then the males. In the second run the start was reversed in the various categories. The results from the Hemel members are posted below.

Also on the same Saturday was the Snowsport South Regional race. Some of our members competed in that event as they were racing in the Southampton Club National the following day.

On Sunday was the ERSA ESX SL race at Brentwood. A very warm day, a field of 150+ competed in the Summer series. A much lower turnout by Hemel with 16 taking part. The awards are different from the snow events taking 3 runs. In the U12 event ERSA use the best two whereas in the main event the awards are based on the Club National format, the best of Run 1 or Run 2 plus Run 3.

The course was set by our head coach, Jon Reidy and the head coach of Evolution, Paul Telling. A fast course with 18 gates, straightforward but fast feet were needed. Our coach, Matt Thompson, was persuaded to forerun, first attempt was credible, we will not talk about the second run but well done Matt. The event started with the females racing the full poles. Our best placed member was Eleanor SCRANGE-HARRISON who completed  goo weekend. After winning yesterday on the snow she finished 1st in the U14 group placing her 6th overall. Nia BOTY, competing in her first year of U14 racing finished 2nd in the group behind Eleanor. Ellie FARROW, in her first year of racing had 3 good runs finishing 10th in the U14’s.

25 151 22806 2003 U14 (10) FARROW Ellie HEM 14.56 * 14.18 * 13.79 27.97

The men then took to the same course set by Jon and Paul. Harry BOTY had 3 good runs, all under 11 seconds and finished in avery competitive U21 group in 4th place. William Neton who seems to be as confident on the plastic as the snow was 3rd in the U16 age group. His brother Charlie NEWTON was 4th in the U14 category.  Alfie TURNER finished close to Charlie in 5th place in the same age group. Thomas REIDY was 8th. Unfortunately Alfie’s dad, Olly Turner, took coaching advice from Jon before his start. Jon was heard to shout turn right at the first gate, unfortunately for Olly Jon did not tell him to turn left a gate 2 and he ended up on the lift track. That set the programme for Run 3 and Olly DNF and so was not placed.

The U12’s raced the same course with the poles being changed to stubbies and the non-turning gates removed to avoid confusion. Holly TUTT was just of the podium in the U10 finishing 4th with Holly ARLOTT in 5th in the U12 age group. Lauren ALEY in her first year finished 0.13s behind in 6th. Since ERSA have allowed entrants from without the region he junior competition has become much more competitive. Byron Appleton after two very good runs putting him towards top spot in the U16’s had a spectacular fall in Run 3 and dnf.

Oscar Louth had a good day finishing 2nd in the U12 group. Our other member in the U12 group was birthday boy, Thomas Beglin who had a better day than on the snow and finished 6th.
