The Interschool’s Challenge took place on Monday and Tuesday 17th and 18th March in Les Houches, France. A number of Hemel members representing their schools took place. There were nearly 400 entries in the event.
The U16 GS comprised of 34 gates with 32 turning, snow conditions were mixed as the temperature was unseasonably high. The results were based on 2 runs with both to count. In the girls event our only entrant was GBR team member, Yasmin COOPER who was placed 2nd, ½ of a second behind the winner. In the boys U16 competition Daniel BARTON representing Bedford Modern finished in 6th place. Morgan DAVIES from Reeds School came 12th. James McCLEISH was placed 21st. Jonty Reid after a decent 1st run unfortunately DNF Run2. The Girls/Ladies U18/21 competed on the same course. Amber BUCKLAND representing a very strong school team from Surbiton finished 6th. The Boys/Mens event followed, again using the same course, Joshua KEANE finished 8th. Luke Riddell, who would have been one of the favourites, DNF Run 1.
The U12/10 GS event saw 160 racers take part. The overall results wer based on 3 runs with the single best run to count. In the boys competition of children yob 2002/2003 our highest placed member was Toby CASE in 4th position. New member, Henry MANDENO representing Highgate School finished in 13th place. Dominic BARTON was 21st. Max Fairfull from The Hall School finished 47th. Fredrick POTTER also from The Hall was placed 71st. In the boys event for children yob 2004/2005 our newest member, Jago DALE-JONES finished 17th.
The Girls competition for yob 2002/2003 saw strong competition with Sophie FOSTER finishing 2nd, Ellie ORCHARD, who has joined the club very recently finished 10th. Ellie McLEISH finished in 25th position followed very closely by Lilyella STEVENS in 26th , the middle daughter of our trainer Holly. Lauren GOULD from the New Hall School finished 33rd.
The U14 Slalom event took place on Monday. D Lee set the first course with 50/467 gates and Emily Evans the 2nd course. Emily set a much straighter course with 45/43 gates. Snow conditions were firm becoming soft. The temperature was +1. The results were based on the 2 runs combined although each race was seeded separately. In the girls event Hemel had 6 girls in the top 10. Sarah WOODWARD was placed 1st , Cerys GORRINGE 3rd, Nicole SHERING 5th, Annecy STEVENS 7th, Meghan DAVIS 8th and Izabelle COOPER 9th. Lily WOODBRIDGE representing Millfield School was placed 16th. Isobel TREW finished 20th and Alice McCLEISH 22nd.
The U14 Boys event using the same course saw Dexter LEE continue his good form and finished 2nd. Alex TOH finished in 18th position with Justin REID from Lockers Park 23rd.
The Slalom event for the U16 athletes took plqace on Tuesday 18 March. Courses were set by Justin Mesuit of NOR fame and D Masfield. Justin’s course was typically Norfolkish, fast with 44/43 whereas the 2 course was more turney with 41/49 gates. Yasmin Cooper, who was a strong contender, DNF Run 1. In the boys event we faired better with Daniel BARTON being placed on top of the podium in 1st place. Morgan DAVIS representing a strong school team from Reeds was placed 10th. Jonty REID, again from Reeds finished in 22nd place with James McCLEISH finishing 32nd. Our only competitor in the U18/21 event saw Amber BUCKLAND finishing in 6th. In the boys U18/21 event our two entrants, Luke Riddel and Joshua Keane DNF Run 1.
The Under12/10 competed through the stubby slalom course. In the boys yob 2002/2003 Toby CASE was our highest placed member finishing in 6th position. Dominc BARTON was 28th followed by Max FAIRFULL in 44th. New member Fredrick POTTER finished 0.05 seconds behind Max in 45th place. Henry MANDENO finished in 49th position. Jago DALE-JONES was 72nd. In the girls 2002/2003 Ellie ORCHARD finished 28th, Emily McCLEISH 23rd and Lilyella STEVENS 33rd.
Taking place on the same day as the above races was the U14 GS event. Again Hemel members performed well with some good performances. The event consisted of 2 separate runs for seeding purposes. Normally the awards are based on the combined times but nothing has been published as yet. The course was set by Scott Bryson, there were 38/35 gates. The snow was assessed as firm and the temperature was +2. In Race 1 girls event Hemel members once again showed good performances taking 6 of the top 10 places. Megan DAVIS finished 1st , Sarah WOODWARD 3rd followed by Cerys GORRINGE, Nicole SHERING in 4th and 5th positions respectively. Annecy STEVENS was 8th and Charlotte TAPSELL was 10th. Further down the field saw Lily WOODBRIDGE representing Millfield School finish 17th and Alice McLEISH 20th. Issy TOH was placed 22nd. Unfortunately Imogen Gordon DNF. The girls second Race course was set by A Moran, again 38/35 gates. The girls once more had very good performances. Sarah WOODWARD moved up one step of the podium from Race 1 and finished 2nd. Cerys GORRINGE and Nicole SHERING had consistent performances and once more finished in 4t and 5th positions. Annecy STEVENS finished in 10th place very closely followed by Charlotte TAPSELL In 12th. Alice McLEISH moved up the rankings from 20th to 17th, 0.33 seconds behind finished Lily WOODBRIDGE in 18th. Issy TOH again finished in 22nd position, two consistent runs and Imogen GORDON overcome her DNF from the first run and finished 23rd. Megan Davis after being top of the podium in run 1 unfortunately DNF run 2. The boys competed on the same courses as the girls, in run 1 the highest placed Hemel member was Dexter LEE in 5th position. Justin REID finished 11th with Alex TOH in 22nd. His triplet James TOH was placed 28th. In Race 2 Dexter LEE finished 6th with Justin REID moving up the field to 8th position. Alex TOH was placed 29th and James TOH 38th,
