An impressive 48 Hemel Race Club members (and families) arrived to compete in the Welwyn Summer League Race. They braved the weather and the flooded patio area to pitch a very muddy camp.
The course was quite straightforward with only a couple of tricky blue gates that caught the more inexperienced racers out. To start, there was very blustery open practice and then a course inspection led by Marco.
Hemel’s racing day commenced with our first brave Hemel racer: Madeleine Burns. Hemel’s crowd did a great job of supporting their club. There were whoops of note for Marco and Holly our coaches. Each competitor had 3 runs. The last runs were testing indeed, as the wind was really very strong towards midday, with racers having to be held fast to prevent them from being buffeted backwards in the start gate. There was a brief plummet in morale, when it was announced by the tea tent that they had run out of bacon, but spirits were raised and the last run saw huge support for some very wet and weary competitors.
Congratulations to all the medal winners – very well earned in such hazardous conditions. Lastly, a very big well done to all first time racers – what a day to start!
